Clearly the combined brains of the BBC Trust and the BBC Executive are struggling to light upon a convincing name to lead their Savile inquiry. Is it to be a retired judge, a working barrister, an ex-cop, or some former broadcasting grandee ?
A woman would be good. There are only two female retired judges under 75. Famous female barristers include Helena Kennedy, who prefers defending, and Cherie Blair. It might take six months, and a barrister would expect a team to do the real work - so Patten will want the financial forecast to look "proportionate" for the papers. Ex-cops ? Lord (Ian) Blair of Boughton, Thommo's chum in Oxford ?
Broadcasting grandees ? Caroline Thomson has only just left. Richard Ayre, ex BBC News, has made something of a speciality of quasi-judicial investigations, but he's now a Trustee. Is it time to bring the BBC's leading investigator, Mark Byford, out of retirement ? Surely only a small-top up fee would be necessary...
