Well, Lord Patten took the scenic route to get his chosen DG, George Entwistle, right under his nose all the time. Headhunters, rumours, mystery candidates are all forgotten over time. George, 49, has an amusing in-tray left for him by his ex-Panorama buddy, Mark Thompson - DQF, a new pay proposition, the sale of Television Centre, a new rationale for BBC World Service, and a press still largely hostile to Auntie on principle.

Congratulations to him. And happy birthday for Sunday...
