Form Book 31

Febrile.  Candidates to succeed Mark Thompson as DG have the weekend to prepare for their first grilling. Will they get a Thames pageant question ?  Ed Richards' hands are clean; some people are trying to lay the blame at the door of George Entwistle, Director of Vision, who was able to avoid a Today grilling by virtue of a booked holiday, apparently. Can't believe he didn't have a phone. Who else was on the Executive steering committee ?  Fans of Caroline Thomson, usually keen to promote her programming experience, suggest she wasn't.

Ladbrokes have issued odds for the presumed final five: 2/1 Richards; 5/2 Entwistle; 3/1 Thomson; 5/1 Boaden and Davie. If you think Davie's the one, rush round to Paddy Power, where he's still 20/1.

Meanwhile Diane Coyle, No 2 to Lord Patten on this preliminary panel, tweeted this morning "Reith's reading list", which I mistakenly took to be "Advice to candidates", but turns out to be books cited in Niall Ferguson's Reith Lectures.

Elsewhere, people with experience of dealing with the Trust offer the thought that there still may be a mystery candidate. Cripes !
