20% of 5 is 1. However making a 20% cut in the BBC's orchestras isn't that easy - salami-slicing can leave you too small to make sense. And there are the BBC Singers to consider as well.

So in autumn last year, DG Mark Thompson put the DQF committee solution (cut one orchestra adrift) in the "too difficult" box, and called in consultant John Myerscough. John's previous work tends to say that the arts are a good investment, generating tons of public value. But the BBC needs cash it can bank.

The staff will be informed of the BBC Trust-approved answer today; expect the word "partnership" to figure large.
