Ear, ear

The perils of success. Another good quarter for BBC Radio in RAJAR listening - and particularly network radio, up 1.6% in year on year reach, to 31.3m.  It stood at 29.3 when Tim Davie took over from Jenny Abramksy in 2008. The trouble is strategic - to be successful without dominating commercial radio. The Trust know that - thus their exhortations for more speech on Radio 2; more news on 5Live; "distinctiveness".

Meanwhile Testosterone Today is romping away on Radio 4, hitting 7.1 million listeners, just shy of Chris Moyles' figure on Radio 1. Will Helen Boaden insist on a change to a winning formula ?

Total BBC Local Radio reach is down 2% year on year, but there are good growth figures for Cambridge, Cornwall, Oxford, Merseyside, Northampton, Suffolk and WM.

In digital, 6Music is up 27% year on year, and 1Xtra breaks 1 million listeners for the first time. The Asian Network is flat, at 472k listeners.

Five Live, moving to Salford during this period, is down 12% year on year. The very plausible spin from Controller Adrian Van Klaveren is that it was The Ashes series in winter 2010; some might point however out that TalkSPORT managed a year on year increase.
