BBC DG Mark Thompson has presided over plans to close 6Music and The Asian Network, plans that have both been reversed. Now he wants to close BBC local radio after 7pm weekdays - unless there's a football commentary that can be shared.
Today, at the Radio Festival, he explained the 6Music reverse ferret thus: Suggesting closing it turned out to be not just one of the most effective, but probably the cheapest marketing campaign in radio history. 6Music's audience promptly doubled, has remained strong, and the value-for-money case for closure evaporated.
Mr Thompson might like to consider changing 50% of the tv trails (very cheap marketing) currently allocated to Strictly Come Dancing to local radio, and then re-evaluating the value-for-money case for local radio DQF cuts.
