And now, as local managers brief BBC staff, the unpleasant fine brush work that makes up the Mark Thompson re-painting of the BBC is being revealed.
The role of radio producer in the BBC's factual department is being re-defined, so that all current staff will have to re-apply for their jobs. Nine posts out of 27 are to go in "politics" at BBC Wales. Some regional reporters on 5Live will lose their jobs. The radio end of the multimedia newsroom will be smaller, as Radio 3 re-uses Radio 4 bulletins; 1xtra news-writing is reduced, using Radio 1 bulletins except at breakfast. BBC London is to lose what are described as "a number of off-peak shows". Radio Scotland will re-broadcast Radio 5 Live overnight - but at the same time, Radio 5 Live is looking to reduce the costs of its overnight operation. Science and Music commissioning will be combined across radio and tv. The Asian Network will continue, but with a 34% cut in its programme budget.
It's estimated that 280 jobs will go around the BBC's local radio stations in England. Nine will go at Nottingham, seven at BBC Lincolnshire.
And there is to be a continuing "efficiency" target of 2.5% - so the cuts will go on until the end of this licence fee period.
