There'll be a few beads of perspiration on brows at the BBC News channel this morning; they knew a review by the BBC Trust was coming, but did they expect Dame Patricia Hodgson to lead it ?
The Dame, considered a "soulmate" by John Birt, spent 30 years on the BBC staff - though never in News. Birt described her as "an extremely smart operator". In 2003, from a position in the ITC, Patricia described the BBC's campaign for charter renewal as being "in deep trouble". In 2004, after the Hutton inquiry, she told the FT "the BBC failed important tests". In 2008, she led a review of bbc.co.uk which got grumpy about a £3.5m overspend, and called for much tighter management. Amongst her current beliefs - the Trustees should set salaries.
