Will the terrible trio of 1998 re-appear at tonight's Sony Radio Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel ? Thirteen years ago, Chris Evans, Paul Gascoigne and Danny Baker were larking about on various tables at the back during the ceremony. Chris was there to receive a Gold award for "Outstanding Contribution to Radio". It was in the days when he was trying to contribute less to radio and more to bar-tenders. All three of our heroes were spotted eating kebabs in the early hours in Soho, just before the announcement of the England World Cup Squad; when sometimes, Evans' drinking sessions would end a couple of hours before his Radio 1 Breakfast show.
Chris is hosting the event, and his Radio 2 programme is nominated in Breakfast Show of The Year. Danny Baker, back at the microphone after a battle with cancer, is nominated as Speech Radio Personality of the Year, for his work with BBC London and 5Live, and for Interview of The Year, with Sir Elton John on 5Live. Paul was spotted in London last month, in the crowd to watch former club Spurs go out of the European Champions League against Real Madrid.
