TV buzz

The buzz around Television Centre is that the "acting" will, as rarely happens at the BBC, become the actor. George Entwistle, 48, in place as minder, looks set to control the biggest part of the licence-fee as the next Director of BBC Vision. He can expect his current package of £197k to rise, but to nowhere near the levels of the previous incumbent, Jana Bennett. Nonetheless, it's quite a move from Silcoates School and Hi-Fi Answers.

Two grim events ahead for George - an appearance in front of the Lords Communications Committee next week. And the production of a plan for slicing the Vision budget by 20%, in the absence of sensible suggestions from the staff...

10.30 Thursday update: Official - George gets the gig.
