Belying the diminutive
The pieces are beginning to be removed from the BBC Journalism jigsaw, but when will we get the new, restructured BBC News picture of those left ? Pete Clifton is the first senior figure from the Journalism Board to follow leader Mark Byford out of the organisation. His current post is "Head of Editorial Development, Multimedia", but, like some of the best, he started out as a sub on CEEFAX. Single-minded, plain-speaking, and generally convivial, he followed in a line of tough cookies who built up the News Online operation as an organisation within an organisation. Now, it needs to be integrated into normal business, to make savings across News. But it will also need find someone with Clifton's energy to fight its corner for investment, if News Online is to hold onto its place in the world and UK rankings.
