The BBC's commitment to production outside London wobbled yesterday with an announcement of job cuts in Bristol and Birmingham in BBC Vision. At the Mailbox in Birmingham, 26 "Factual" posts out of 50 may close, across the range of producer/directors, assistant producers and researchers. In Bristol, home of more staff in "Factual" and the Natural History Unit, the cuts will hit 21 out of 68 staff. These figures are from BECTU.
Evened out across the two sites, this is a cut of 40%. If this isn't mirrored in London, staff in Bristol and Birmingham will ask why not; if it is repeated in London, it'll be devastating for BBC Vision Productions and their Chief Creative Officer Pat Younge. How come, when DG Thommo is talking about 20% cuts in programming, Vision has to double them ?
