This may well be a break-through, but it's a little hard to tell. The BBC believes we're on the verge of being able to edit and exchange video via the web in way that is "frame accurate". Up until now, video edited via web browsers makes compromises in timecode and frame references, rounding things up and down. Perfectly acceptable in the small box version of YouTube, but as dodgy-looking as web cameras on a big HD screen. Now apparently HTML5 will allow distance editing and transfer of top quality shots - which should bring us sharper-focussed coverage, for example, of a changing Middle East.
The news comes in a blog post from Chief Technical Architect of BBC Future Media, the exotic-sounding Dirk-Willem van Gulik. He's clearly an expert in his field, and excited. There, however, is something rather fuzzy about his use of English. "Perfectionistic", indeed !
