Radio Today reports that Radio 1's strategy to steal headlines from the new "national" radio stations starting in January is to give the big guns a holiday. Zane Lowe will stand in for Chris Moyles at breakfast in a week dedicated to "new music", and other specialist jocks get to play in day-time.
The new "nationals" all sit somewhere between Radio 1 and Radio 2 in their target audience (and playlists). In a woeful abdication of responsibility by Ofcom, the drive for diversity and distinction on the DAB multiplexes is now almost completely over. Ben Cooper at Radio 1 is clearly doing what the Trust and Tim Davie wants in highlighting what Radio 1 does differently. Bob Shennan at Radio 2 has yet to show his hand (unless the key moves are hiring Vanessa Feltz and firing Mark Lamarr). How will Radio 2 makes waves in January ?
