Moving targets

The BBC's finance boss, Zarin Patel, says diversity targets at the Corporation have been achieved. Receiving the award for Public Servant of the Year at the first Asian Awards, she said "Last month, the BBC moved ahead of its staff ethnicity target for the first time.  While there is still more to do, this helps ensure that our content is truly representative of all our audiences."

The target for staff overall is 12.5% black and minority ethnic staff; at January 09, it stood at 12%. The target for senior managers is 7%, which had reached 5.7% by January 09.  The ambition was to reach the targets by 2012, and at one stage management bonuses were said to depend on delivery.  Clearly there's been an improvement, against a continuing background of headcount reduction - can it be kept in balance with 16% cuts ahead, and question marks over The Asian Network and World Service language output  ?
