Thommo won't have decided to part with Byford before thinking about structures. It's clear; Mark Byford won't be replaced. But a Number 2 of some sorts has to be anointed - the Executive got into hot water with the Trust when it was clear that both Thompson and Byford were on holiday at the same time when the Russell Brand affair blew up. (It was also probably a bad idea for Thommo to claim for the flights home).
The options: give it to COO Caroline Thomson, who has some journalistic nous. Or, let it be shared between Jana Bennett (Vision) and Tim Davie (Audio & Music). Not good - Jana was slow off the mark in The Queen Is Not Amused Or Is She ? saga. And Tim Davie fumbled Russell Brand. There'll have to be a seat at the top table for News, so Helen Boaden will be advanced - but how far ?
More idle speculation in the morning. Stirring times are tiring times.
