Blimey. Mark Thompson has done the ruthless thing, finally. Mark Byford will go in March next year, and he will not be replaced. Sharon Baylay (Marketing) and Lucy Adams (HR) get biffed off the Executive Board, and will report to Caroline Thomson (COO) instead, according to Ben Fenton at the FT. He hints a third person, as yet unidentified, will be removed from the top table.
This is indeed a night of the long knives. Mark B's focus, since his poor performance as Acting DG in the aftermath of Hutton, has been the "Journalism Directorate", and its physical embodiment at the re-developed Broadcasting House. Leaving in March next year will mean he doesn't get to use this new investment, and, indeed, leaves the current "Directorate" structure of the organisation in some doubt. Or, the structure stays exactly as it is, with Helen Boaden, Director of News, moving forward in the Byford role...
More as soon as I've calmed down....
