As those of us in university towns and cities rail against the return of students, spare a thought for some of the tasks freshers face.
The University of Kent's Centre for Journalism is run by my former colleague Tim Luckhurst, a man never afraid to ask the big questions. Like this...
First year undergraduates should submit to Anastasia Bakowski's office by 12 Noon on Friday (24/9/10) an essay answering the question: What is journalism for ? The essay should be typed and of not more than 500 words and not less than 450 words in length. Suggested reading includes, My Trade by Andrew Marr (Pan Books ), Journalism, A Very Short Introduction by Ian Hargreaves (Oxford University Press) and Why Democracies Need an Unlovable Press by Michael Schudson (Polity Press).
Posted yesterday, that's a four day turnaround. Tim, you're getting soft.
