You can expect a cascade of outrage over coming days directed at Craig Oliver, new Controller, English, BBC Global News. Faced with cuts that need to be implemented in the coming financial year, he's put an end to drama specifically commissioned for the World Service (currently 14 plays a year); Mark Coles' show, World Of Music, comes to an end, as do World Service specials that currently run alongside the Proms and Wimbledon. Drama has been a part of WS output for 75 years. Mark Coles (declaration: I worked with him on Today) is a real talent, and his show is a distinctive part of modern WS output.
The only good news on the horizon is that FCO funding is now apparently sorted with the Treasury in the Public Spending Review. But at what level ? Best deal could be 5% cuts for each of three years...
