Marvin Isley, the family bass-player, who's died aged 56, gets songwriting credits way beyond the group's output - but most of them are credits for samples.
Marvin, along with brother Ernie and Chris Jasper stepped up to join the Isley Brothers (of Twist and Shout, This Old Heart of Mine, Behind a Painted Smile, etc) in the 1970s - and thus came the pivotal album 3 + 3. Opening track That Lady, Pt 1 and 2 was a reworking of "Who's That Lady ?" by the Isley Brothers from 1964 (you can hear it on Spotify). The cheesy Hammond and trap drumming were updated with Marvin's new bass line, Ernie's Santana/Hendrix guitar, and contemporary latin/disco percussion.
Basement Jaxx didn't mess around with it much in "Just 1 Kiss". Other Isley samplers: Alicia Keys used Footsteps in the Dark on "A Woman's Worth"; and Lily Allen's "Friend of Mine" uses For the Love of You (albeit in the reggae version by John Holt).
