Beavering away...

The BBC Trust, never shy about trumpeting how busy it is, has published a "workplan" for 2010/2011. No new business in the highlights, but I though I might help them finish early with a few suggestions...

  • The strategy review. The Trust asked the DG to conduct a review of what the BBC should concentrate on in the future. It is currently considering his proposals and expects to publish a final strategy in the autumn.
Reduce the running costs of 6Music and the Asian Network by 33% (£9m and £12m pa down to £6m and £8m) and nick the required £14m pa from the £600m being "reinvested" in "tv quality".
  • Value for money review on continuing drama. This will assess the management of the production of continuing dramas such as Eastenders, Holby City, Casualty and Doctors.
Get some honest benchmarking done on Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Pobol y Cwm. Publish the relative costs and leave the BBC execs to fall on their swords.
  • The service review of Radio 3, 4 and 7 will begin and the Trust will publish the findings of its review of BBC One, Two, Four and the Red Button.
Why review R4 and 7, when the management has change plans for R4 and 4Extra ? Are you really brave enough to criticise R3 ? Why review BBC One, Two, Four and the Red Button, when the management itself says it needs £600m to improve quality ?
  • Impartiality review of the BBC's science coverage and output. The Trust will engage with licence fee payers, industry experts and the scientific community as part of this review.
Will Mark Byford walk if you find science coverage in any way partial ? Or Editor-in-chief Mark Thompson ?
  • Review of the complaints framework. The Trust oversees the BBC's complaints processes and this year plans to carry out a review of the complaints framework to ensure that it is working in the best possible way for licence fee payers.
A review that will last as long as some of the serious complaints themselves take to be dealt with, first by management, then by the Trust, with Ofcom sweeping up behind. Take at least one body out of the process.
