Charlie Gillett, who introduced so many people to music from different parts of the world (before the phrase World Music was coined) has died. I happily still have a treasured copy of his first compilation album for Oval Records, Another Saturday Night, originally issued in 1974, and apparently still available as a CD, though now with Ace Records.
As well as Promised Land, Johnnie Allan's cajun cover of the Chuck Berry original, lend an ear to Un Autre Soir D'Ennui, Belton Richard's version of the Greenfield/Sedaka song that was a US hit for Jimmy Clanton in 1960. Many more than me will miss Charlie Gillett's ear for finding different sounds that really repay listening.
