Richard Sambrook is leaving the BBC in March, stepping down from his current role as Director of Global News. 30 years with the Corporation - Radio News, TV News, Newsgathering, Director of News (Kelly/Gilligan/Hutton) and new media guru (the one who said he didn't see a problem with BBC staff being on Facebook).
I worked with and for him - very happily - so I'm sure he won't mind me rushing on to the speculation bit. How they'll replace him will be more important than who will replace him. The Global News Division is a muddle of outputs, funding streams, staff and styles. Peter Horrocks is in pole position to step up - but already has a huge change programme on his hands at the World Service. Mr Byford and his strategists need to think this one through.
Update: 1130 Guardian reports that Peter Horrocks will combine Director of Global News with his role as Director of World Service. Either they already thought it through, or....
