"What Becomes of the Brokenhearted ?" was written by William Witherspoon, Paul Riser and James Dean and was a Motown hit for Jimmy Ruffin in 1966. This version features Zombies' vocalist Colin Blunstone with Dave Stewart on synthesisers, tweaking the arrangement and providing a new instrumental break. It was a No 13 hit in 1981. It's not the Annie Lennox-Dave Stewart - this Dave's bands included Uriel, Egg and Hatfield and The North. He's gone on to form a long-standing duo with Barbara Gaskin, from Spirogyra.
There are later good versions of the song by Paul Young (used in the film Fried Green Tomatoes, and a US No 1) and by Joan Osborne singing with the Funk Brothers.
