Free papers
The Evening Standard goes "free" tonight. Interesting questions will be answered; presumably it moves to one edition, but what time will that edition hit the streets ? Will it be thrust at you, as in the old days of London Paper/London Lite competition ? Indeed, will there be genuine Lite/Standard competition ? Or will the Standard just lie on unattended stands, as the Metro does in the morning ? What happens to the Standard sellers, those established, but often grumpy guides to tourists at all good tube stations ? How far outside central London does "free" run, with 600,000 copies ? What happens to newsagents outside zones 1, 2 and 3, who only stay open in the afternoon for sweets, ciggies and Standard sales ?
