An interesting tension between the Manchester Evening News (part of the Guardian Media Group) and the Audit Bureau of Circulation. According to Press Gazette, the MEN has "temporarily" withdrawn from ABC scrutiny, and published its own version of figures (paid-for and free) for April to June this year. These claim a circulation of 88,555 Monday to Wednesday, 165,238 Thursday to Friday; and 67,349 on a Saturday. According to the most recent ABC circulation figures the MEN recorded a daily average circulation of 153,724 during the second half of 2008.
The MEN has been pioneering a hybrid paid-for/free distribution strategy – also known as the "doughnut" approach – offering the MEN as a freesheet in central Manchester but still paid-for in the suburbs of the city.
