Calculating North

Freedom of Information and The BBC: Part 2. The Telegraph asked for and got a 2006 BBC document, on the move to Salford, putting the net cost of the move in operating costs between £15m a year cheaper and £75m a year more expensive than staying put. However the figures all included the government and Salford Council sponsoring the BBC Philharmonic to the tune of £16m if the move went ahead.

The BBC says, in the long term, it can be more efficient, and still hopes to recoup something from the sale of Television Centre (now inconveniently partially listed).

Meanwhile the Telegraph also claims that the cost of the BBC acting as guarantor on unsold houses, as middle managers move north, is likely to rocket.
