The National Council for the Training Of Journalists released some interesting stats, at the headline-grabbing Society of Editors conference yesterday (all extremely well covered by Guardian Media.) They've interviewed over 200 editors and employers across tv, radio, newspapers and magazines about the skills gaps they're finding in new recruits. In "new media" skills, 59% of editors said new starters lacked video skills, 57% said they didn't understand how to write in a way that connected with search engines, and 56% said the new staff weren't able to work across platforms. In the skills of longer-standing, 64% said recruits struggled with finding their own stories. To me, this points to a problem in the recruiting process, rather than with the candidates !
