The modern world sometimes tries to track value against price around the globe by looking at the relative cost of a Big Mac. Over my life, I've tried to track inflation by the rising cost of paperback books - more later. Today (three days late) I noticed that the Telegraph had gone up from 80p to 90p. An increase of two shillings in old pre-decimalisation money. I haven't been able to track back the cost of the Telegraph in 1971 - but The Times cover price in January of that year was just one shilling. 5p. Now, logic suggests the next rise will take us to the £1 quality daily.
