(Written before the opening ceremony of the Beijing Games). They've got leading Chinese film director, Zhang Yimou, consultants including Stephen Spielberg and a culture that is rich in grand displays. We've got Martin Green, Head of Ceremonies, London 2012 (formerly with AEG Europe and the London Mayor's office) and we should mention Bill Morris, formerly of the BBC. Our big events are either focussed on the Royal Family - Jubilees, funerals, weddings, Trooping the Colour, the Edinburgh Tattoo - or rock and pop, from the Isle of Wight to Glastonbury via T4 on the Beach and Latitude.
London's contribution to the closing ceremony in China features (apparently) a Routemaster bus, David Beckham, Leona Lewis and 40 dancers. Theme is "transformation". Really ?
Who should we get to pep things up when it's our turn to open ?
