The Daily Mail notes that today is the final day for bids to cover live Football League matches in 2012/13. The BBC suddenly moved in the market with a three year deal struck in 2007, which won them ten live matches and highlights starting in 2009, plus Carling Cup coverage. Director of Sport at the time, Roger Mosey, said "Our aim in the three seasons of our agreement is a simple one: to showcase the new acquisitions across all our platforms, and to make our commitment to football deeper and stronger at every level".
Will the BBC bid 20% less, in line with DG Thommo's cuts ? Have the audiences for the Saturday night two-hour wedge of goal action delivered value for money ? Dominic Coles, Chief Operating Officer for Journalism, is still handling sports rights negotiations, though his title is on the line, with the imminent disbanding of the "Journalism Division". He's been described as "chipper" recently, though it's not clear whether this is the result of a personal negotiation on his next three years or cash from Thommo to play sports rights poker with the big boys.
