Look out, tv indies. Richard Desmond is bringing business models that have made Northern & Shell what it is today to Channel Five.
So instead of paying Elizabeth Murdoch's production company, Shine, for what Five ordered - the Don't Stop Believing talent show - he thinks he should pay less, because it didn't deliver ratings. The Guardian says he's taking the same approach of holding back final payments to a number of other suppliers. It is unlikely that he'll do deals that swing the other way - more money for big audiences.
(Channel) Five dipped below 5% share over each of the last two years, after rising slowly since its launch in 2002. Desmond handed over £104m for the network in July. Share then was 4.4, but it nudged up to 4.8 at the start of October.
PS: The Paddy Power bet on next's Channel Five share has closed, but there's now a more amusing one on who'll replace Natasha Kaplinsky at Five News. Personally, I'd advise against having a punt. Five News is made by Sky. Owner Rupert Murdoch. Elizabeth Murdoch's dad.
