Farmyard economics

Jeremy Clarkson's solution for the BBC. Edited from the Sunday Times

"First things first, then, bring all of the nation’s broadcasters together under one massive Union Flag umbrella and most importantly, get rid of scheduling [I think he means all linear channels]. Make fewer, more expensively produced shows and put them on the Beeb’s iPlayer, which remains one of the best bits of tech in the business. And then people can watch them whenever they want."

"I’d keep Radio 4 and BBC News, set the annual licence fee at, I dunno, a tenner and tell the people running this slimmed-down operation that they’ve got to stop taking the piss."

Last year, the BBC spent £324m on News and Current Affairs, £234m on the World Service, and £84m on Radio 4. To that, you must add distribution costs for News and Radio 4.  Call it £800m.  Licence fee income was £3,834m.   So the Clarkson option would require an annual licence of around £37 per household (more if you want sport news).
