Caroline Thomson is coming back to the BBC, as a non-executive director replacing Sir Nick Serota, appointed by existing Board members.
She lost the race to be DG in 2012, to George Entwistle, and left shortly afterwards with a £680k pay-off. In 2017 she joined the board of Oxfam, stepping up to chair the organisation later that year. She got grief over the handling of sexual misconduct by Oxfam staff in Haiti, before her time; and stood down in October 2020.
In 2019 she revealed she has Parkinson's Disease, so is now six years 'post-diagnosis', and continuing to work as Deputy Chair and Trustee at the English National Ballet and Board Member at the National Gallery Trust. She is also a Member of the Board of Trustees at the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery and Non-executive Director at Videndum (formerly Vinten and Vitec), the tv and film camera specialists.
