Last week BBC arts supremo James Purnell told us the key part of presenter pay assessment was "value to the audience".

Last night's flagship arts show Imagine went out at 2245 on BBC2. Edited and presented by Alan Yentob, it was a cinematic American documentary (1 hour 45 minutes long) made for HBO in April last year about photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, which needed a 1 minute 20 introduction from Alan, in case the UK audience wasn't sure it was a documentary about photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
