The Grand National provided a rare opportunity for ITV News to beat the BBC. The commercial channel's five minute summary at 6.25pm was watched by 3.11m (23.8%). The BBC's ten minute national bulletin at 6.35pm was watched by 2.9m (21.4%).
Of course, both were beaten by the combined forces of the BBC's regional news teams, scoring 3.16m (22.3%) for their ten minutes and local weather.
