BBC DG Lord Hall has delivered the first Sue Lloyd-Roberts Memorial Lecture, recalling their time together on the Oxford University magazine, Isis.
Tony Hall was at Keble, doing PPE; Sue a mile to the south, studying history and modern languages. Tony invited Sue to join him at Isis, then a weekly term-time magazine; Sue was fashion editor, had her hair cut by Vidal Sassoon, and modelled clothes by Mary Quant. This was 1971. In 1972, the publication hit (yet another) financial crisis - an large, apparently unexpected printing bill. Tony Hall mounted a rescue campaign, picked up in the nationals. A couple of days later, a telegram
arrived, saying, ‘£1,000 on its way to
you. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.’
After university, Lord Hall joined the BBC as a news trainee, while Sue joined ITN's parallel scheme.
