Protected species

More than a few eyebrows have been raised around the BBC at the statement by incoming Today editor Sarah Sands that she knew of no forthcoming budget cuts. And indeed, on BBC staff side of the jobs website, the Radio 4 flagship, placed alongside the NHS and the Monarchy by Sarah, is recruiting. There are ads for Broadcast Journalists (1 permanent, 1 six-month) Senior Broadcast Journalists (1 permanent, 1 six month) and Multimedia Reporters (1 for a year, 1 for four months).

Many other departments will enter the new financial year with, if not cuts, at least a recruitment freeze. Still, as at Radio 2, it seems you've got to put your money where the audiences are....
