Numbers

Two heartening ratings yesterday for the BBC. The Jeremy Paxman/Brussels hour, produced by indie Brook Lapping, didn't get entirely swamped by soaps, returning an average of 3.1m viewers, a 15.6% share.

And then many more opted for the BBC1 ten o'clock news bulletin - 4.52m, a share of 27.9%. That's after 3.2m watched the preceding programme on dementia with Angela Rippon.
