I am reminded that it's now 1,000 days since James Harding arrived as Director of BBC News from a brief period of unemployment, and we're still hunting the News Snark. In Lear's poem, the Bellman and his nine companions end the hunt bootlessly - "For the Snark was a Boojum, you see".
