The Force

BBC News dons a self-sewn prickly hair shirt when it puts together Newswatch, giving viewers a brief chance to criticise editorial judgements. This week, the Editor of the BBC1 6pm and 10pm bulletins, Paul Royall, was grilled over Star Wars puffery. He brushed it off.

He may have known that, as Newswatch was being put together on Friday, BBC Director of News James Harding was in a radio studio recording the last (of the current series ?) of On Background ('beyond the headlines and behind the stories'). Including.. "The new Star Wars film was released this week to almost universal acclaim. Michael Eisner, former CEO of Disney, tells us about storytelling and what makes a blockbuster a hit ...."
