In 2005, Gary Smith, who'd learned his HR trade in 15 years as Group Employee Relations Manager of British Coal, joined Scottish Opera as a consultant.
In 2005, Scottish Opera decided, amongst other savings, to lay off the 34 members of its chorus. 20 were re-auditioned for future freelance work, but there would be only four productions a year, not all of them requiring a chorus.
In 2015, Gary Smith joined English National Opera as HR Advisor.
