People noted many pages returning "500 error" pages, with some others loading intermittently and others completey offline. The iPlayer service was affected too, but broadcasting continued as normal.
The BBC Press Office was on hand with the usual detailed explanation.

Things seemed to improve from 1030am on. The BBC News website said it had been a web attack, "a distributed denial of service", with someone or something swamping the site with more traffic than it could handle. At time of writing, there was no official word from the BBC Press Office twitter account..
