Spectre-like coverage of the film version of The Lady In The Van across the BBC this week. It is made by BBC Films in partnership with Tri-Star, and has been directed by Nicolas Hytner, BBC non-executive Director.
Nicolas and writer Alan Bennett have featured together on BBC London and Radio 4's Front Row; Alan has been on Today, The One Show, and Steve Wright in the Afternoon. Star Maggie Smith has been on The Graham Norton Show and BBC News bulletins with Arts Editor Will Gompertz.
The Lady In The Van was first published in the London Review of Books in 1989 and then in book form in 1990, with a postscript was added in 1994. Radio 4 producer Gillian Hush got Alan Bennett to re-tell the tale in four parts in 1990. The stage play, also directed by Nicolas Hytner came in 1999. A radio version of that was made in 2009 by Gordon House - I can't remember the same sort of publicity then.
