It's an appointment that will have absolutely no-one running to the Morningside bookies for a big win; Sarah Smith is to be the BBC's first Scotland Editor.

This will expose the former Channel 4 reporter and presenter to a wider audience than she currently enjoys on Scotland 2015, which, at present, edges Newsnight later for BBC2 viewers in Scotland. (Pacific Quay's finest graphic artists are currently sucking their thumbs wondering about a New Year update to the titles.)  Shelley Jofre seems to have eased into Sarah's old seat already...
