One-sided debate

Meanwhile former BBC HR Director Lucy Adams continues a sort of solo social media Socratic dialogue with her former employers. Her latest post on Linkedin is headed "Ridding the World of Appraisals: My (slightly sad) Mission".

At the heart of the argument is what Lucy called the Five Great Lies of any performance management system.

1: Annual objectives align all employees to the company goals and provide clarity and ambition
2: Appraisals improve performance through feedback
3: Appraisals provide objective and calibrated evaluation and measurement
4: Rating individuals helps to drive a transparent and fair differentiation
5: Appraisals are required for managing poor performers
