Paint it black
In a week when more generously-resourced news organisations have made errors, your correspondent wishes to withdraw the story below. More informed sources tell me that a change in redundancy payments is off the table; accrued rights and all that. Doesn't, of course, mean that there won't be a change to come in the future for new employees....
The days of gold-plated redundancy deals at the BBC have been over for some time; but the move from silver-plate to flaky metallic paint looks set to come in March 2013.
Tomorrow's DQF announcements will "encourage" consideration of an early exit by giving 18 month's notice (as promised by COO Caroline Thomson) of new terms. This key part of the formula will change...
Under the new deal, a month's severance pay for every year of service will move closer to a week's pay for every year of service.
There will be, whatever Thommo says, a detrimental effect on quality as a result. A goodly number of bright, talented people with long service will do the maths - go now, get a nice lump-sum AND a new job elsewhere that could be more fun.
