The BBC's Chief Operating Officer, Caroline Thomson, has fitted in a visit the Radio 1 Big Weekend today. Caroline has a weekend home near Carlisle, and Radio 1 has taken over the local airport for performances by The Arctic Monkeys, The Foo Fighters and Lady GaGa.
Caroline is married to Carlisle born and bred Roger Liddle, last year elevated to the peerage as Baron Liddle. Until April he was chair of enterprise body Cumbria Vision (closed by the coalition), and he is on the board of directors of the University of Cumbria. Their son, the Honourable Andrew Benjamin Thomson Liddle is a fan of Carlisle United.
Carlisle paper The News & Star estimates that the Radio 1 Weekend will boost the local economy by some £4m.
