Opinion former

Howdy, partner.  The buzz about the future management of CBS News is getting louder. In July, the rumour was that new owner David Ellison might turn to David Rhodes. David was president of CBS from 2011 to 2019, before joining Sky News. And the rumour included the idea that Bari Weiss would come in alongside Rhodes as an editorial guru of some sort.

Bari, 41 (Shady Side Academy, Pittsburgh and Columbia), described as "a sharp-tongued critic of progressive authority", resigned from the New York Times, with a letter that went viral, in 2020. The Financial Times called her a "self-styled free speech martyr". All forms of anti-semistism have been on her journalistic radar since college.

Since the NYT, her Sub-stack blog has morphed into The Free Press, a burgeoning newsroom with good contacts in the Trump administration, hosting myriad podcasts and looking for a future in documentaries. The suggestion is that CBS would buy the whole shebang, and inject some of Bari's Trump connections in to the agenda.

Now the scuttlebutt is that Bari might get the top job at CBS News without the need for Rhodes. Since 2017, the BBC's principle newsgathering partner in the USA has been CBS News....
