DID done ?

"Well, Kirsty, Lennie Niehaus has always been one of my favourites, and it's hard to choose just one..." The American saxophonist, composer and arranger now apparently features in the selections of 122 Castaways, according to the BBC's Desert Island Discs website.

Or at least, his name has been substituted whenever a Bing Crosby title appears. This means that Beatrice Lillie and Leslie Howard (in 1942) seem to be requesting Lennie Niehaus records, when Lennie was about 13.

Lennie played with Stan Kenton, and went on to do film scores, including Pale Rider and Unforgiven for Clint Eastwood, as well as featuring as conductor and orchestrator on Escape from Alcatraz, Gran Torino and Mystic River. Clint hasn't yet been on Desert Island Discs, and I can find no evidence of a genuine Niehaus selection on the show. .

Here's Lennie with a quintet from 1954.

  1. Hi Bill

It's a pan-BBC database error rather than a specific DIDs problem, for instance, as I'm sure you know, Lennie Niehaus never recorded a version of White Christmas.

Lennie's score for Unforgiven is excellent.
